A Proclamation

Whereas Canadian police and peace officers make valuable contributions to the safety of Canadians and it is considered appropriate that there be, in each year, a day to mark and pay tribute to the hard work, dedication and sacrifices made by Canadian police and peace officers;

Whereas memorial services are held in communities across the country on the last Sunday of September of every year to commemorate those police and peace officers who were killed in the line of duty;

And whereas, by Order in Council P.C. 1998-1703 of September 24, 1998, His Excellency the Governor General in Council has directed that a proclamation do issue declaring the last Sunday in September of each year to be “Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day”;

Now Know You that We, by and with the advice of Our Privy Council for Canada, do by this Our Proclamation, effective September 24, 1998, declare that last Sunday in September of each year to be “Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day”.

Of All Which Our Loving Subjects and all others whom these Presents may concern are hereby required to take notice and to govern themselves accordingly.

In Testimony Whereof, We have caused these Our Letters to be made Patent and the Great Seal of Canada to be hereunto affixed. Witness: Our Right Trusty and Well-beloved Roméo A. LeBlanc, a Member of Our Privy Council for Canada, Chancellor and Principal Companion of Our Order of Canada, Chancellor and Commander of Our Order of Military Merit, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada.

At Our Government House, in Our City of Ottawa, this twenty-fifth day of September in the year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred and ninety-eight and in the forty-seventh year of Our Reign.

By Command,
KEVIN G. LYNCH
Deputy Registrar General of Canada
