An Act to amend the Citizenship Act (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s call to action number 94)
SUMMARY
This enactment amends the Citizenship Act to include, in the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship, a solemn promise to respect the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, in order to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s call to action number 94.
Preamble
Whereas the Constitution Act, 1982 recognizes and affirms the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples;
And whereas the Government of Canada is committed to responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s call to action number 94;
Now, therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

1 The schedule to the Citizenship Act is replaced by the schedule set out in the schedule to this Act.
Coming into Force

2 This Act comes into force on the day after the day on which it receives royal assent.

I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada, including the Constitution, which recognizes and affirms the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen.
